A Bit of Yoga History

A Bit of Yoga History

Maybe you’ve been doing Yoga for a while and consider it a discipline that helps you stay healthy physically and mentally. Or, maybe you’re just getting into it.

If you’re in the latter party, let’s take a second to chat about the technique’s history. Feel free to skip this if you’re already well versed in the ways of the yogi.

The word Yoga means “to unite, connect and relate” in its original Indian language.

While the origins of the word might be well known, the origins of the practice itself aren’t. However, researchers speculate that its first forms occurred between the years 5,000 and 10,000 BC. They believe that the exercises were performed in order to approach the power of the gods with really difficult movements.

Yoga is now one of the most famous meditation practices, as it’s an easy way to stay mentally healthy and keep your body in shape.

Types of Yoga

With the history lessons out of the way, let’s talk about the different types of yoga out there. This is important so that you know which classes you should be looking for!

Here’s a quick rundown of a few common types of yoga.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga

If you believe in chakras, Kundalini is a good pick. This is one of the oldest styles of yoga, and its goal is to align the seven chakras of the body.

Kundalini focuses on finding our hidden energy. The idea is that when performing slow movements, you focus not only on your breath but on mantras, releasing internal energy. This helps heal damaged chakras.

Integral Yoga

Integral Yoga

Integral yoga focuses on a combination of spiritual, physical, and mental meditation and movement techniques.

This type of yoga tries to combine the body, mind, and spirit through not only asana postures but also meditations or other techniques such as pranayama (breath control).

Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti Yoga

This is a very spiritual type of yoga, and is based on five pillars that help the liberation of the soul. These pillars are:

  • Ahimsa: Non-violence. Do not think, do not speak, and do not act violently. It ensures non-violent relationships while interacting with the world, including animals.
  • Bhakti: Devotion. Chant mantras and help have a selfless purpose.
  • Shastra: Study. Study the sacred scriptures like a yogi.
  • Nada: Sound. This pillar helps to learn to listen to the sound of the heart. A classic sound is the well-known OM.
  • Dharana: Meditation. Allow your thoughts to come and go without focusing on any one of them.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga

This type of Yoga is characterized by being relaxed, leisurely, and passive. Most of their asana postures involve sitting or lying on the floor.

Yin movements achieve a mental and physical balance due to maintaining postures for between 5 and 10 minutes. This must be combined with slow and controlled breathing to achieve an ultimate state of peace and relaxation.

Nidra Yoga

Nidra Yoga

With this type of yoga, your goal is to enter a state of meditation. The key to doing so is the basic relaxation posture called savasana.

Normally this type of yoga is done at the end of a standard class. But, you can also use this practice on its own to help you wind down at the end of the day.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga

As its name says, this type of yoga seeks to restore the body. It’s another relaxed form of yoga.

Unlike Yin Yoga, the restorative allows you to do postures with supports such as yoga pillows and blocks. This helps you avoid tension and maintain a sense of release in the body.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga

With this yoga, you get a little more movement going. The idea is to vary postures every few minutes while maintaining steady breathing.

Vinyasa is sometimes used as a warm-up in other types of yoga due to the dynamics of its postures. An example of vinyasa yoga is the sun salutation posture.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga

This type of yoga can be a mental challenge for beginners since it’s characterized by being performed in a room or place that’s kept at an average temperature of 104 °F.

It consists of 26 positions, designed in a consistent way that allows each of the postures to give the entrance to the next. This helps work the body in a weigh that results in weight loss without incurring injuries.

If you want to try Bikram yoga, you’ll have to head over to SMASH yoga studio in Poblado, since it’s one of the only places in the city to try it!
