Do you like coffee, good food, and snazzy art? Then you’ve got to check out Matilde Medellin.
This cafe-restaurant in Medellin is an iconic place that shares the best of coffee, wine, art, and food.
I stumbled upon this place when I was desperate for a caffeine kick one day. Walking into the building, I thought it was just another one of Medellin’s many coffee shops.
Boy was I wrong!
If you’re interested in learning a bit more, keep reading. Here’s what you need to know about Matilde Medellin.
Matilde Coffee Market is a coffee shop and event space with an industrial and avant-garde design.
This place is really cozy, full of plants, and decorated with lights that will make you feel right at home. One of the things I love about this place is that there are murals covering the walls. Those go perfectly with the vintage tiles and wooden chairs.
Matilde has two different spaces: one a cozy coffee shop interior and the other a covered patio with gorgeous views of the sky.
Although it’s not technically a coworking space, the place has high-speed WiFi which makes it perfect for sitting down and knocking out emails or hopping on virtual meetings.
Or, you can just mess about scrolling through pictures of cats on Instagram!
Whatever it is that you’re doing in Matilde, the space is super cozy and has everything you need to while away an afternoon.
The place is also pet friendly, which means you can bring along your four-legged and feathered friends.
And, they’ve got an event space where you can celebrate a birthday party or set up a corporate event that shows off your brand.
Okay, enough about the space. Let’s be honest, what you’re really coming here for are the food and drink.
Both are excellent, and you can come for one without the other. Here’s what to know about the menu at Matilde.
Coffee is clearly one of the specialties of this corner of Medellin. At Matilde, you’ll find aromatic espressos, traditional americanos, and smoother milk-based beverages such as macchiatos, lattes, and cappuccinos.
If you’re looking for a coffee recommendation, I’d have to say you should try the cappuccino with a shot of Bailey’s. Or, go for any of the other coffee drinks with a shot of liqueur on the menu-–they’re all great!
Even though the drink has a bit of booze in it, the baristas still take the time to top them off with a bit of latte art.
Besides hot or cold coffee, you can enjoy tea infusions, flavored sodas, and sangrias. Or, go for a classic mimosa. Everything’s good, so you really can’t go wrong.
And of course, you can’t miss the sweet moment: desserts, ice cream, and bakery in style.
The only thing better than sipping on a craft cup of coffee is drinking it while enjoying a bite to eat.
Matilde has a delicious all-day brunch, so if you’re wanting to eat eggs benedict on a weekday, this is the place to go.
Those who aren’t obsessed with brunch still have tons of options to pick from. The menu features popular items such as eggs of all kinds, hamburgers, sandwiches, pancakes, and veggie options, of course.
You can also find dishes to share with your friends or family like empanadas or nachos.
Matilde is a place that lends itself to many types of events thanks to the administration and the unique ambiance in the place.
While they offer plenty of one-off events, there are a ton of recurring activities to check out, too. Here are a couple of the events featured at Matilde.
Every Saturday, painting and wine take over Matilde to bring out the city’s most creative types. With the event “Paris se toma Matilde” you’ll get to enjoy an afternoon sipping on bright wines and painting.
This event is held at two different times, one in the evening and one in the afternoon. Both time slots last two hours, so you’ve got plenty of time to make a masterpiece.
You can attend with prior registration and the staff will provide you with all the necessary materials to bring out your inner Picasso. In addition, you’ll be guided by an artist in your artistic process.
What’s cool about this is that unlike other wine and paint nights I’ve been to, the teachers actually let you pick what image you want to paint. In the end, everyone comes out with something unique, which I think is a lot cooler than just making one standard image.
Despite the fact that there’s wine involved in this event, there are no age restrictions. Anyone is able to join (just not everyone will get a glass of wine). You don’t need to know how to paint, either!
They teach you everything you need to know at the event.
Every Thursday Matilde runs a wine tasting workshop given by “Mujer del Vino”, a specialized sommelier who walks you through a proper wine tasting.
Just like the paint and wine night, you don’t need to have any background. All you have to do is come with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!
Now, one thing I’ve got to mention is that this isn’t a wine tasting.
Sure, you’ll get to sip on plenty of types of wine.
But, the real point of the workshop is to teach you about wine, its origins, pairings, and other handy information. You’ll leave ready to throw a rad dinner party!
Although Matilde has its two regular events, there are also tons of other classes and workshops that happen from time to time.
These vary based on availability and scheduling, and there are always new events popping up. Here are a few of the other events Matilde has run in the past:
Among the most recent events was a fashion show by the Colombian women’s underwear brand Cher France stands out on its 28th anniversary.
Personally, I’ve only ever managed to make it to the self-makeup workshop, but it was a lot of fun and I definitely learned how to step up my style!
The workshops are super thorough and you definitely get your money’s worth. Plus, they all include drinks and/or food, so that’s an added perk!
Whether you’re looking to rest up for an afternoon or you’re wanting to get into work mode, Matilde Medellin has got you covered. Or, hit up one of their events and get to know some new friends in a new city!
