The Best Water Activities in Guatape

Are you looking for activities full of excitement and adrenaline? Or just a relaxing ride through the Colombian landscape? Then Guatapé is the place for you.

This cheerful and colorful city has the  best tourist sites that offer the best water activities. It doesn’t matter if you’re a daredevil or prefer something quieter; you’ll always find something fun to do.

Keep reading to know how to make your trip to Guatapé one of the best experiences of your life.

Speedboating

Speedboating

This is one of the most fun activities from my perspective, in which you ride a speedboat at high speeds all over the dam.

Prepare your waterproof camera. This is one of the most recommended activities to enjoy in Guatape and around the beautiful mountain landscapes.

Most tours last about an hour or two, and they will give you a tour through the dam until you reach the village of the Old Peñol. You can also visit the cross and the museum.

Here you will learn about the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir story and interesting info about the Nare River, which meets the reservoir.

If you want something more luxurious or a unique place for a celebration, you can rent a boat that plays music and other fun features.

Water Skiing

Water Skiing

The locals will tell you that water skiing is one of the best activities to do, where you go tied by a rope to the speedboat so you can ski on the water.

I recommend you wear a lot of waterproof sunscreen since you will be in the sun for a long time while enjoying the view. If you’re a beginner, applying for training before starting is best. This is an extreme sport that needs technique and experience.

If you like speed, it’s the perfect activity for you.

Inflatables

Inflatables

If you’re not as sporty as I am, you would probably prefer a ride that doesn’t need much physical activity, don’t forget to wear some waterproof sunscreen too.

You just have to rest in an inflatable tire tied to the speed boat and enjoy the speed and the amazing landscapes without lifting a finger.

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding

I recommend this activity to wakeboard lovers who know the necessary techniques and fabulous jumps to make in the air.

However, if you want to try, you can always ask for some training first.

Flyboarding

Flyboarding

This activity is for the bravest who know how to handle the propelled water jets.

It remains one of the most popular activities in Guatape, and I am sure anyone who dares to try it can eventually manage the water thrusting.

Boat Tour

Boat Tour

In this tour, you will get on the so-called rumberos boats to tour through the reservoir.

I highly recommend celebrating your birthday or taking your friends on these boats, which can accommodate up to 100 people and have everything you need while enjoying a refreshing drink.

The best part of the tour is when the sun goes down, and you enjoy cool climates on the comfortable terrace.

Planchon

Planchon

This is another type of boat. It’s like a living room and can accommodate up to 20 people!

This is a premium sailing experience where you can host your events. Planchons have everything you need, such as coolers, sound equipment, and large sofas.

Kayaking

Kayaking

You can go on them all alone, but I recommend going with a guide. You can also choose the distance you want to travel, depending on your physical condition and the amount of time you have.

You can also hire an instructor to teach you how to paddle and explore the dam.

I recommend taking the time to tour all the places and stop at Fantasia Island for a picnic. This is an amazing experience.

Keep in mind that each kayak can accommodate up to two people, so if you go with your group of friends, you will need to rent two or more.

Here is a list of things you should take with you, as kayaking can take around four to five hours in the sun:

  • Enough sunscreen. I recommend you put on a little every hour.
  • Sunglasses.
  • A cap or a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Protective clothing covering your arms, neck, and legs (to avoid sunburns).
  • Water bottles.
  • Snacks.
  • A waterproof backpack so your money and cell phone don’t get wet.

You can also rent fishing equipment to have the full experience. Your guide can take you fishing while you visit the best places in Guatapé. To be honest, I didn’t catch anything, but I had fun trying to catch something for lunch.

Also, If you’re not interested in kayaking, you can rent a stand-up paddle board or SUP board.

Jet Ski Rides

Jet Ski Rides

Would you like to fulfill your dream of jet skiing? In Guatapé, you can do it!

Local guides can give you tips on where you should go, so you can take time to visit the most important places or just take an adrenaline-filled ride.

There are three types of jet skis with different kinds of cylinder capacity for you to choose from.
