Makeup Workshops in Medellin: What to Know

Makeup Workshops in Medellin: What to Know

TLDR? Medellin has a lot of Makeup workshops, but the best places to learn how to do your makeup are at The Academy, Colombia Makeup School, and Has Belleza.

I love putting on my makeup every day. I think it’s a fun way to get creative with my look and show off my personality and how I’m feeling!

However, I won’t pretend that I’m a makeup expert. That’s why I decided it was high time to look into some makeup courses around the city.

In Medellin, there are actually a few places where you can learn to do your makeup, and they’re all a lot of fun.

Here are some of the top places to learn to do makeup in Medellin!

Matilde Makeup and Brunch

Matilde Makeup and Brunch

Matilde Cafe is a cute little coffee shop located in the Poblado district. In fact, it’s just around the corner from some of Casacol’s top rental properties and hotels

While Matilde offers a ton of different events, one of them is their makeup and brunch workshop.

The workshop is only offered on select dates, and the café runs them a couple of times a year. They’re cute places to learn some professional makeup techniques that you can apply at home!

Very shortly after arriving in Medellin, I took it upon myself to attend one of these workshops, and I loved it!

The workshop takes you through every step of your makeup routine, starting with moisturizing your skin and ending with applying eyeliner and falsies.

The best part about the workshop is that you get brunch included. Not only do you get to learn professional makeup techniques, but you get to sip on lattes and munch on avocado toast while you do it!

The workshop includes a packet of brushes and an eyeshadow palette, but you can also purchase additional makeup from the host if you want.

Personally, I loved the experience, and I’m sure that if you check it out, you will too.

The Academy

The Academy

With a name as sleek and simple as ‘The Academy,’ it’s no wonder this is a top-notch place.

The Academy is a little more formal than one of Matilde’s workshops and is all about teaching you how to turn your passion into your profession.

The Academy calls itself “a bridge” to connect its artists with film sets, fashion events, and audiovisual projects. So, this is definitely a place that’s more focused on professional careers than simply learning how to improve your morning makeup routine.

Still, if that’s something that interests you, this is a cool place to go. You can learn everything from glam looks to costume makeup!

For the digital nomads out there, they also offer exchange programs to Mexico. Who knows? Maybe that’s how you’ll continue your travels around the world!

The Courses

The Academy offers mostly courses that run for one or two semesters, although they do host the occasional workshop on body painting and other fun, off-the-wall types of makeup.

A few of the techniques and courses you can take here include:

  • Bridal makeup
  • Fashion makeup
  • Techniques for eyes and lips
  • Body painting
  • Costume makeup

If you have something specific you want to learn, I’d recommend reaching out to the school. They really do have tons of classes and are always adding new techniques, so you’re bound to find something that you’re interested in!

Colombian Makeup School

Colombian Makeup School

The Colombian Makeup School is, as you might imagine, the most well-known makeup school in the city.

Here, you’ll find makeup artists that host regular workshops and courses, showing you how to do your makeup (or someone else’s) in a step-by-step process.

What’s cool about this place is that it was actually founded by a makeup artist from right here in Medellin!

The academy has several classrooms with dressers, mirrors, lighting, chairs for the models, and a television that shows the teacher’s processes in high definition. They also have rings of light, so you can snap some gorgeous photos of your finished work.

More than 4,000 makeup artists have come out of CMS ready to venture into the cosmetic art scene, fashion world, and backstage in theater productions.

The Courses

At the Colombian Makeup School, they offer four different courses.

The first is their Social Makeup course, which lasts just one week. This course takes four hours a day and teaches you how to apply glittery, glamorous looks.

The second class is their initiation course, which consists of 18 classes, which are a mix of theory and practice. This course teaches you all about the basics of color, skin, cosmetics, tools, and corrective makeup techniques, for day and night, and contrasts.

Their third course is the advanced class. This is a series of 20 theoretical and practical classes, perfect for those who already know a little bit about makeup techniques. This course teaches you seven different types of looks and how to create them.

Finally, there’s the intensive course. This is a one-week course that teaches you everything from natural looks to high-fashion couture. If you’re really into makeup and want to devote your time to this class, the intensive is a great way to go.

Has Belleza

Has Belleza

Last but not least is Has Belleza. Has Belleza is a makeup academy located in El Poblado, with tons of different services and educational programs.

Even though Has Belleza is mostly for formal certifications, it’s still a cool place to check out. That’s especially true if you’re interested in going pro!

The services and courses they offer include:

  • Image consulting
  • Technical makeup degrees
  • Courses on night out/glam looks
  • Eyebrow design courses
  • Eyelash extension courses
  • Training on eye makeup
  • Hair coloring classes
  • Hairdressing classes

If you’re wanting to kickstart a cosmetics career, these are some good classes. You can either start your career from the ground up or can learn about specific looks and techniques.

The technical certification lasts two semesters, while the glam course lasts just 140 hours. Or, if you’ve got a free weekend to spare, you can sign up for the eye makeup course which is a 16-hour intensive class.

For those who enjoy learning from the comfort of their living rooms, the armored makeup course might be a better pick. This class teaches you how to apply waterproof, sweatproof makeup that lasts all day.
