In this article, I’ll fill you in on what you need to know about Wi-Fi in Medellín, and what else you can find in the City of Eternal Spring. 

What Is Medellín Like for Digital Nomads?

As one of the most visited cities in Latin America, sunny Medellín is a city with a wide variety of restaurants, cultures, and residences, full of places worth visiting and people worth knowing. 

If you fall in love with the city during your visit and wish to extend your stay, there are many different ways to maintain a visa, such as applying for a student visa to study Spanish or any other specialty of your choice. 

What Types of Internet Can You Find in Medellin?

In Medellín, you can find internet access for your smartphone or computer almost anywhere. 

Allow me to explain your two options to access the internet in Medellín: 

Places With Free Internet

You can find free internet with a good signal in a variety of places throughout the city. 

As a city crowded with tourists, Medellín specializes in maintaining free internet service in cafes, restaurants, hotels, or even specific areas designed for coworking. 

Keep in mind that these open networks are considered non-secure networks, so make sure you’ve installed a VPN to keep your data secure and provide you with peace of mind. 

Then you’ll be able to get your work done wherever you need, hopefully with a good view of Medellín’s surrounding mountainside! 

Internet for Your Phone

Although you can access free Wi-Fi from your cellphone in many places, you may not always have access to it while sightseeing throughout the city. 

Don’t get too worried – obtaining a sim card in Medellín is quite simple! There are two ways to do it. 

You can purchase a sim card from a street vendor, and once you’ve activated it, you’ll be able to make calls within the country and access the internet depending on the number of gigabytes you’ve purchased. 

While this may be the simplest way to obtain the internet, if your sim card fails, you’ll lose the investment you’ve made. 

I recommend going to the official store of an internet provider of your choosing. The most popular providers in Medellín are Claro, Movistar, and Tigo. All you need to do is provide your passport to put the sim card in your name, and purchase a package depending on how many gigabytes you need and how long you intend to stay in the city. 

As Colombia is not currently equipped with 5G technology, the cellular internet service you’ll find in Medellín is 4G.

There are many places in Medellín you can turn into a good workspace without inconvenience, or you can visit one of the city’s specific coworking areas.
