No time to read? You can Medellin’s biggest market and learn about native fruits with an exotic fruits tour led by Real City Tours. Click here to book!

When you touch down in Medellin, you’ll be greeted by tons of delicious foods. I’m talking buñuelos with arequipe, empanadas full of rice and beef, and bubbling bowls of sancocho.

Now, while these foods are all delicious, there’s also lots to be said about the simple fruits and veggies in Medellin!

If you’re interested in trying some exotic fruits that you won’t find anywhere else, you should consider checking out Medellin’s exotic fruits tour, led by Real City Tours.

Let’s take a look at everything to know about this tour!

What to Know Before You Go

Plaza Minorista What to Know Before You Go

If you’re planning to book an exotic fruits tour with Real City Tours, there are a couple of things to be aware of before you book.

For one thing, you should know that this tour fills up fast. The tour departs every day at 9:30 am, but if you don’t book your spot, you’ll wind up losing out on the event.

Don’t worry, though, no payment is due upfront. You can pay in cash or PayPal once you get to the tour.

Speaking of payment, it costs $85,000 COP to go on the tour. The tour lasts two and a half hours and includes as many as 11 different fruits for you to try. Plus, the tour guide gives you fresh juice to sample!

Another thing I love about this exotic fruits tour is that it is 100% vegan and vegetarian. Even though there are lots of food tours around the city, many of them aren’t vegan, which can make it tough for those individuals to explore Medellin’s foods.

The tour takes you on a meandering journey through the Minorista market. That’s about 15 minutes from most of Casacol’s Poblado properties.

The last thing to know before you go is that you’ll be doing a lot of walking. You’ll be indoors, so you won’t need a rain jacket (although, knowing Medellin’s weather, I’d still bring one for when you leave).

What to Expect on the Tour

What to Expect on the Tour

Now that you’re prepped for the tour, it’s time to start tasting some of Colombia’s wonderful fruits!

The tour departs on time (rare for Colombians) from the market, so make sure to arrive about five minutes early. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing your group from the get-go!

Then, your guide will take you to the market where you’ll start your tour!

The First Fruits

The start of the tour takes you to a couple of fruit stalls where you’ll get to try tree tomatoes and lulo. I’ve mentioned this before, but these fruits aren’t really the best eaten raw. Still, they’re Colombian staples so it’s a good idea to try them!

The Restricted Section

Okay, don’t go getting any Harr Poter-esque ideas here. The restricted section of the tour is just a section where you’re not allowed to take photos.

But why? It’s a public market, right?

Well, in this part of the market, you’ll find superstitious medicine. Think herbs and people practicing healing with an egg.

Even though you can’t take pictures, it’s a pretty cool place to check out on your journey!

Fruits, Fruits, and More Fruits

After you make your way out of the restricted section, you’ll be back among the fruit stalls. Here you’ll get to try a bunch of other exotic fruits, such as:

  • Chontaduro
  • West Indian locust (it’s a fruit, not a bug, don’t worry)
  • Soursop
  • Spanish lime
  • Peruvian ground cherries
  • Guava
  • Dragonfruit
  • Fig (also called prickly pear)
  • Banana passion fruit
  • Sapote
  • Passion fruit
  • Borojó
  • Granadilla

Some of these fruits are stranger than others, so come with an open mind! And, if you don’t like everything you try, don’t worry. It’s all part of the experience!

The Extras

Even though the tour mostly focuses on fruit, that’s not all you’ll get to eat. You’ll also get the chance to eat arepa de choclo with a bit of queso cuajada (my favorite).

These fresh corn arepas and farmer’s cheese are a great addition to the tour because they fill you up a bit more than the fruits do.

Aside from the arepa, you’ll also get fruit juice made in milk. Fruit juices in milk are the best types of juice (and they usually cost a bit more than juices prepared in water) so enjoy it!

What to Do After the Tour

What to Do After the Tour

Once the tour is over, you can thank (and tip) your guide. Then, it’s time to head off on other adventures!

Since the market is located pretty close to one of Medellin’s major metro stops, you can take it to pretty much anywhere else in the city.

However, if you want to enjoy some other things to do that won’t cost you a penny, you can also check out the Plaza de Botero! This is a 100% free activity and is located just about a 15-minute walk from the market.

I highly recommend checking it out while you’re in the area. Ubers and taxis add up quickly in Medellin, so you can save a couple of bucks by killing two birds with one stone!

Or, you can always head back to your cozy Casacol apartment. We won’t judge!
