The day before my private tour, the operator provided me with information on what to bring, coordinated the pick-up location, and asked about my skill level. They explained that the routes for their tours are adapted depending on your skill level and interests. From off-the-beaten-track trails to calm paved roads, you have the option to customize your adventure.

As a more experienced rider, my tour was a combination of bumpy dirt paths and evenly paved streets. I was accompanied by two experienced riders from the farm, one of whom spoke English to provide translations.

Halfway through the ride, we stopped at a small mountain shop to rest the horses and buy some snacks. Throughout our trip, the route was filled with stunning natural sights of lush green mountains, colorful flowers, and shimmering butterflies. Gorgeous!

Small Group Tours 

Small group tours are the way to go for nature lovers who want to socialize with other travelers; or people who want a more budget-friendly choice.

Tour the Colombian countryside on a half-day or full-day excursion. These groups are made up of a mix of experience levels, so they will introduce you to the basics of horseback riding.

Then it’s off to the races. Well, not quite. There are several small group tour options depending on your interests and availability, so it is the dealer’s choice when it comes to your tour.

Ride along the mountain terrain of Medellin and experience the wildlife of the forest. 

Combination Tours 

Combination tours are best for visitors who want to make the most of their itinerary. These excursions give you the option to combine horseback riding with other adrenaline-filled activities.

For example, you can choose to go zip-lining or can ride in nearby tourist destinations like Guatape. Why choose just one tour activity when you could pick two or three? Head off on a jam-packed day of adventure.  

How to Prepare for Your Horseback Riding Tour 

Most horseback riding tours include roundtrip pick-up and drop-off from the popular tourist neighborhoods of Poblado and Laureles.

Beforehand your agency should send you a list of instructions on what to bring and things to keep in mind for your specific tour. No matter which excursion you choose to go on, below is a list of items I recommend bringing: 

• Comfortable close-toed shoes 
• Water-bottle 
• Windbreaker 
• Jeans 
• Small backpack/ or fanny-pack 
• Sunglasses 
• Sunscreen 
• Bug-spray 
• Cash for snacks / or bring your own snacks
• ID card or valid passport

Depending on your tour, they might advise that you do not bring your cell phone or camera and will offer to take pictures of you and your horse before or during the ride.

Okay, okay. I get it. I’ve already talked a lot about the different types of tours. Now, how do you go on one yourself?

There are tons of places in Medellín where you can go horseback riding. However, I have to be honest—most of these are tourist traps.

A lot of the horseback riding companies will charge you upwards of $100 USD to go on a horseback tour. But, if you look off the beaten path, you can score a great ride for well under that.

Here are a few top horseback riding tours you can take in the city.

Fonda Caballo Loco

Fonda Caballo Loco, also called Cabalgatas Medellin, is one of the top agencies for horseback riding, and they’re super affordable too. They have three plans:

1. Basic Plan: A two-hour guided horseback ride
2. Parrandero Plan: A slightly longer, guided horseback ride with lunch included
3. Mega-Plan: The longest guided ride with lunch and alcohol included

All plans take you through the hills of Medellín and give you a chance to check out some gorgeous nature walks in the area. The prices start at about $15 USD (subject to change), so I’d say that’s a pretty good deal!

Another good place to check out is Cabalgatas Oriente. This place has two-hour and four-hour horseback riding tours.
