Pro Tips for Scoring Cheap Flights to Medellin

Do you feel like airlines are trying to trick you? Are you frustrated by constantly searching for an affordable flight ticket? You’re not alone!

There are many myths and legends about finding cheap plane tickets to any destination in the world.

As a seasoned traveler, I’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks that makes it easy for anybody to get some good deals online. Here are a couple of tips.

1. Choose Flexible Dates

Choose Flexible Dates

When looking for an affordable flight, don’t select definitive dates.

Keep in mind that there are high seasons when flights are in demand and off-seasons when traveling is usually more economical.

Also, consider that workday flights are cheaper than weekend flights (most people like to travel on weekends).

A good rule of thumb is to select your departure destination and number of passengers and let the flight calendar automatically open with the prices. This will show you when the cheapest days to fly are.

By looking at the calendar and seeing the different dates throughout the month, you can easily choose which day is more viable for your pocket.

2. Buy Directly from Airlines

Buy Directly from Airlines

Using agencies or digital platforms can be useful when comparing different airlines’ flight prices, schedules, and stopovers. It can also be useful for purchasing flight, hotel, and car rental packages.

However, sometimes these platforms will charge you a little more for that service and convenience.

While that’s fair, if you’re on a tight budget, you probably aren’t interested in any package. Besides, the platforms don’t always offer you discounts.

In this case, it’s best to do a comparative search there and then go to buy directly on your preferred airline’s website. I personally always check Avianca and Latam when looking for flights as those airlines usually have some good deals on their sites.

3. Delete Your Cookies and Browse in Incognito Mode

Delete Your Cookies and Browse in Incognito Mode

I know it sounds a bit strange, but have you ever stopped to think about how many times you searched for a flight?

Were the results seemingly expensive flight options? And, did you start getting advertisements everywhere about flights and destinations that you’ve searched for before?

Browsers save your search histories to give you customized adverts. They want you to shop!

To get around this you can try browsing in incognito mode and always deleting cookies. While it’s not a surefire way to stop airlines from raising their prices, it sometimes helps.

4. Use Notifications from Airlines and Agencies

Use Notifications from Airlines and Agencies

There are some platforms where you can enter a destination and your dates, and then wait for the site to notify you when they have tickets available at a low price!

This saves you from having to constantly search to find your tickets. Just make sure to click on “allow website notifications” (you can change this after you get what you’re looking for).

5. Select the Most Convenient Airport

Select the Most Convenient Airport

There are cities with more than one airport, and the cheapest tickets are usually those that arrive at airports located on their outskirts. If you book a flight to an airport located on the outskirts of a city, always remember to consider your ground transportation costs to your true destination.

Medellin has two airports: An international one located on its outskirts (approximately 30 minutes away by car) and a smaller one for national flights within the city.

If you have a layover in Bogotá or another city in Colombia, you can look for tickets that take you to the EOH airport (Olaya Herrera Airport). However, if you fly directly from your home country to Medellin, you’ll most like have to stop at MDE (Jose Maria Cordova Airport) in Rionegro.

6. Use Your Points from Your Credit Cards or Memberships

Use Your Points from Your Credit Cards or Memberships

We often forget the benefits we have from being members of a bank or specific membership clubs.

Lots of credit cards have mileage points for specific airlines. My personal favorite is Discover, although the card isn’t accepted everywhere. Still, they give you a ton of points so it’s easy to accumulate enough to buy tickets.

It’s not just credit card points you can use, either. If you’re a frequent flier of an airline, use your miles! They are always an excellent option for reducing your transportation costs.
