A Marriage of Form and Function: Staying at Energy Living

TLDR? Energy Living is one of the best places to stay while visiting Medellín.

Medellin is a city with a very contemporary look. With its eyes on the future, it has begun to foster a reputation as one of the most progressive cities in Latin America. This attitude is readily apparent from the moment that one steps foot into one of its glamorous and chic central neighborhoods.

The freshness is apparent in everything from its Metro to the fashion sense of its cosmopolitan citizens. Certain features of the city have begun to symbolize Medellin’s progressive attitude by their very existence.

One of these places would have to be the hotel and apartment complex known as Energy Living. In this guide, we’ll cover what a stay at this incredible place is like.

The Building

The Building

Given the iconic nature of its appearance, it isn’t tricky to imagine Energy Living becoming a structure that becomes emblematic of the city of Medellin. Something that when someone is shown an image of the building, it’s evocative of the place itself that the building exists in.

The architecture, the location, the amenities, the views—when I first laid eyes on this building, it immediately jumped out at me even when I knew nothing about it. I saw its wabi-sabi geometry contrasting artfully against the natural contours of the rainforest.

Then, much to my delight and surprise, I discovered that it was a Casacol property.

You can find Energy Living situated on the slope of a gorgeous mountain just minutes from the lively social center Poblado. The structure is nearly impossible to miss, even amongst the other towers in its vicinity.

This is largely due to its extremely distinctive and award-winning design. The segmented floors of Energy Living jut and protrude from its center in a pleasing yet unorthodox manner.

Some floors wear only a flat façade on their exterior, whereas other units on the same floor have balconies for residents to sunbathe on. The layout is asymmetrical, but in the most interesting way—it almost has to be seen to be believed.

The Arrival Experience

The Arrival Experience

When I arrived at Energy Living, all of the employees who assisted me with checking in treated me with graciousness and respect. There was ample security and a selection of beverages available a la carte.

I was even treated to a personal liaison who took me to the unit I was to stay at. They showed me all of the necessary information I might want to know during my stay. I found this to be a particularly generous touch.

The multi-room unit I stayed in was classy, spacious, comfortable, and clean. It came equipped with all the modern amenities that one might desire out of a luxury living experience.

This included a massive high-definition television and an all-in-one washer and dryer unit. Not to mention the enormous shower and bathroom.

The kitchen was well stocked with everything one might expect. There was a small care package that came with chocolate, water, ground coffee, and a couple of beers. It quickly ensured that the stress of my uber ride to the hotel evaporated.

All in all, I couldn’t have been happier with the way I was treated upon arrival at the hotel. I was even contacted by the manager of the building, who checked in to see if she could do anything to make my experience better.

View From the Top

View From the Top

One of the most engaging elements of Energy Living would have to be its rooftop pool, lounge, and gym area. The views from this part of the building are quite simply stunning.

The entire valley containing Medellin and the surrounding mountains are completely visible from the top of the hotel. The natural beauty of the city is on complete display.

The pool is temperate and sizable, and there’s a jacuzzi nearby for hot soaks. Additionally, there is a small sauna close to the pool area that I made use of.

There is also a small gym available that allows you to work out in style as you gaze down at the valley below through the fantastic views you’re given.

I went to work a sweat out, jumped in the pool, soaked in the hot tub, and then ordered a frosty beverage from room service—the epitome of relaxation.

21st Century Attitudes

Along with its very progressive exterior design, the interior of Energy Living is also composed with the future in mind. Much of the infrastructure of the building is outfitted to make it as green and eco-friendly as possible.

The in-unit washer-drying utilizes recycled water. There are also compost and recycling bins available for waste. Plus, there’s a small garden on the exterior of the building that I found rewards contemplative walks.

On top of all of this, the hotel is in the vicinity of a small creek that runs through the center of Poblado.

The snacks and room service provided come from local Colombian companies. These companies utilize fair trade and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

The building is located conveniently in between the city and the gorgeous mountains and natural parks that surround Medellin. Subsequently, it is quite easy to access green space from the hotel’s vantage point.

Location, Location, Location

Location

Another thing I was given when I checked into Energy Living was the Casacol Black Card. This VIP card comes with discounts allowing one to take their Medellin experience to new heights. You can also save a couple of bucks while you’re at it.

Many of the Casacol Black Card businesses are located in the Poblado neighborhood. Poblado is known around Medellin as the center of fine dining and nightlife in the city.

Energy Living’s proximity to Poblado means that a quick walk down the street brings you straight into the heart of Medellin nightlife. And with the Black Card in hand, it becomes even easier to take a bite out of everything the neighborhood has to offer.

I took advantage of the convenience of the location and hit Poblado running, and then went to grab a bite at Asian-fusion hotspot Moshi and then popped over to Carmen for drinks later. I received a generous 15% discount at both locations with the Black Card.

Energy Living: A Stay With Style, Substance, and Sustainability

Energy Living’s appeal is impossible to ignore. This is true from the location to the architecture, from the amenities to the delicious food available both for dine-in and room service.

The hotel has everything one could desire out of a luxury living experience. And you get it for an extremely modest price compared to many other cities.
