A Guide to Where to Learn the Tango in Medellin

tango-in-medellin

Short on time? Casa Gardeliana offers tango lessons as well as history and information about this dance style.

Even though the tango is an Argentinian dance, it’s been a major part of Medellin culture for a century now.

In fact, tango is now so popular in Medellin that there’s an international tango festival held there every year!

If you want to dive into the culture of Medellin by learning the tango, good for you. Let’s take a look at some of the top spots to learn the tango.

Casa Gardeliania

Casa Gardeliania

This is actually a museum dedicated to a tango star who met his death in Medellin. The famous star was a victim of a plane crash in the area.

To commemorate his life and his talent at tango, the city of Medellin constructed a museum.

Today, the museum is not only a great place to learn about tango, but also a place where you can take tango lessons!

The museum is brightly colored, which instantly gets you into the mood. The classes take place on Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and are for people ages 14 to 29.

They’re a great introduction to the world of tango. Plus, you can explore the museum grounds and learn more about this dance style when you’re done.

A Puro Tango

A Puro Tango

If you’re wanting to step away from casual group classes and step into a school that really teaches you to dance, A Puro Tango is the way to go.

This dance school is a much more formal academy and is a great place to check out if you’re really serious about getting good at tango.

The school offers a range of classes, including beginner group classes and intermediate classes. Or, you can opt for private classes to help you hone in on your dance moves even more!

What’s fun about this spot is that they also run regular shows. You can show off your new skills at one of their performances or can take your skills to the next level and try competing!

Chetango

Chetango

Chetango is another great place to try learning the tango if that’s something you want to do while you’re in Medellin.

This dance academy runs a couple of different types of dance classes. Their group classes include:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced
  • Technical tango and special moves

You can also take personalized, private classes. For introverts like me, that was a great way to learn some tango without feeling self-conscious!

Aside from their classes, Chetango also runs the occasional dance event. These events are great places to practice your tango moves with a partner. And, they’re usually free to attend!

Admittedly, the best part about this school is the fact that it’s located in the Poblado neighborhood. That puts it conveniently close to Casacol’s apartments and vacation rentals.

Bailonga

Bailonga

Another dance school you should check out if you’re interested in learning the tango in Medellin is Bailonga.

Bailong has extended hours, which is one of the reasons it’s such a great spot to check out during your stay! No matter when you have time to squeeze in a dance class, Bailong makes it possible.

Bailonga offers both semi-private group classes and private classes. Whichever you choose, you’ll get a fantastic teacher that really helps you learn the dance moves.

Bailonga is also great because they go above and beyond in terms of the types of classes they offer. Here, you can also learn bachata, salsa, and other Latin rhythms.

Disfrutango

Disfrutango

Disfrutango mostly offers virtual tango classes, which makes them ideal for anyone who’s trying to take care of themselves in light of the Covid-19 situation.

The academy offers classes that are run online via zoom as well as webinars that you can tune into. The webinars are free, which gives them brownie points in my book!

At Disfrutango, you can take your lessons in one of three languages:

  1. English
  2. Spanish
  3. Portuguese

The fact that they offer multiple languages makes them super accessible to visitors. And, you can take those classes in private, semi-private, or group classes.

Isa Tango Club

Isa Tango Club

Isa Tango Club is probably the most foreigner-friendly dance school you’ll find. This school specifically caters to individuals who are visiting Medellin from abroad, offering classes in both English and Spanish.

The club offers dance classes as well as tango workshops and seminars. The workshops are places where you can hone in your techniques while the seminars talk about the history of tango and other fun facts.

You can also get involved with tango events and shows here. The academy runs regular shows and competitions, making it the perfect choice for a date night!

Solo Ritmos

Solo Ritmos

Solo Ritmos offers a whole lot more than just tango classes. You can actually take just about any type of dance class you can think of here!

Located in the Laureles sector of Medellin, this is a super upbeat dance school. The teachers here put a lot of work into making their classes fun and engaging for everyone involved.

Just like most of the other dance schools around Medellin, you can take both private and group classes here.

However, they also offer a couple of additional types of classes including:

  • Children’s classes
  • Classes for seniors
  • Couples classes

What’s great about that is that you can really get the whole family involved. Don’t just treat yourself to tango lessons – get into it with grandma, grandpa, and the kids, too!
