Soul Lifestyle Hotel, commonly simplified by the locals to “Soul”, is a luxurious condo-hotel located in the Alejandria area of El Poblado Medellin. It is nestled nicely at the bottom of a quiet road in El Poblado leading into the heart of the town. Soul attracts short and long-term visitors from all over Colombia and the World.
The hotel is located at Cra. 35 #2 Sur -120, Medellin. This address may seem a little confusing to understand for someone from the U.S. But if you follow the link above it will take you to the exact location on Google Maps.
The local version of Whole Foods, named Carrulla (pronounced “Ca-ru-ya”), is conveniently located within 5 minutes walking distance. Here you can find all your necessities and comforts from milk and cereal to wine to ice cream.
Carulla is located in the Zona Dos Mall Commercial, at Cra. 32 #2 Sur 47, Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia. Here you can also find various restaurants, both fancy and simple. The local version of 5 Guys, El Corral, is in this mall as well as the all too familiar Burger King.
The surrounding area is not just full of food, though. There are parks and plenty of wonderful natural surroundings to experience. No matter if you’re coming to Medellin for a night on the town or to reconnect with nature (or both!) you are in the perfect location.
With its convenient location and luxurious accommodations, let’s see what else this hotel has to offer. Keep reading, there is much more to see.
My boyfriend and I just returned from our stay at the Soul Lifestyle Hotel. Being a foreigner, I was not sure what to expect when booking my stay here for the first time in Medellin. Previously, we only stayed at Airbnbs sometimes with complicated key/entry access, so I was impressed that we were greeted by full-time reception and security staff. Communication at this hotel can’t be talked up enough, the staff is 100% bi-lingual and so helpful to first-time Medellin travelers.
The easiest and cheapest way to book your stay is to go directly through the company’s website, at Casacol. Here you can also find the contact information for Ximena the manager, who was my point of contact on WhatsApp. She is extremely helpful and friendly and can definitely answer any questions you might have before or after you check in.
Once we had our booking and lodging all squared away, our flight from Bogota to Medellin only took 20 minutes. Not including the line at the airport, of course. Flying from the States to Colombia, however, will take you 3 hours from Miami and 5-6 hours direct from JFK.
The hotel provides its own private transportation for reasonable rates, ranging from $30-$40 from the airport to the hotel. My boyfriend and I already had a Cabify account set up, so we used this from the airport to Soul and paid $37 USD.
Using Soul’s transportation is going to cost you about the same as a taxi, but the drivers all speak English which is super helpful and can give you great tips for navigating the city and all the tours and sights.
Additionally, if you do not have a Colombian phone number Cabify may not be available to you. UBER also works well in Colombia, but sometimes with a lot of driver cancellations and often poor communication (very little English among drivers). I recommend you get in touch with their transportation prior to leaving home. I will share their contact information in the transportation section.
The ride from the airport to the hotel will take about 25 minutes through a new tunnel or about 40 minutes down the old “Las Palmas” route. But, don’t worry, you will find the ride scenic with the spread of buildings dotting the gorgeous mountainous landscape. It is enchanting during the day with the red brick buildings basking in the sun. In the evening with the lights illuminating the sky, it looks like a blanket of stars.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a pleasant receptionist who will provide you with your pin code to your bedroom. We arrived in the afternoon and Valentina was working at the front desk. I was in contact with her via WhatsApp prior to arrival and she helped us get our room in order.
I remember the fresh scent of coffee brewing in the lobby, which I was welcomed to along with creamer and sugar. Once our room was ready (check-in is at 3 pm – earlier when possible), we made our way to the 4th floor.
Before getting into our room specifically, I want to take a moment to familiarize you with the atmosphere of the Hotel. Because it really surprised and pleased me.
The best word I can think of to describe Soul is “refreshing”. It was clean and uncluttered. It was not the type of Hotel that would overwhelm you with elaborate decor or trinkets. Rather, it is a place that feels clean and efficient, home away from home.
For someone like myself seeking an undistracting and homely place, Soul is the best atmosphere. This is not to say it is not refined, however. The interior is modern and has a calming color scheme.
Combined with the natural surrounding and quiet neighborhood, the hotel is a perfect place to refresh.
Our suite was both spacious and luxurious. It consisted of a combined kitchen and living room with a scenic view from the balcony.
The balcony connects to the living room. It’s only separated by a sliding glass door and curtains if you so desire. I personally thought this was perfect since it allows you to see the outdoors comfortably. In other words, if you’re accustomed to the cold like me, you may want to enjoy the view while also enjoying the AC.
The bedroom was stunning, with a bed that felt large enough for three people. My boyfriend and I found it to be one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in. Apparently, they designed their beds from scratch with a local manufacturer. Beds in Colombia are generally hard and uncomfortable (local tastes), but not at Soul!
The apartment was equipped with one full bathroom and one-half bathroom. And the shower was always hot soothing with great pressure, but not the kind that sprays large quantities of water globs at you.
Last, the kitchen is fully equipped. It has a four-burner electric stove, fridge and freezer, and small commodities such as a microwave and blender. It was perfect for cooking at home when we weren’t enjoying the amazing restaurants in El Poblado.
For anyone traveling and hoping to offset their carbon footprint, Soul is the place for you. Much of the hotel is naturally ventilated, such as the lobby. In other words, it’s nice and cool thanks to the large windows and doors bringing in the fresh air. And on top of that, all the hot water in Soul is produced by solar collectors on the rooftop.
Don’t worry though, it’s not hot! It’s surprisingly nice and cool. AC is available in every room when you need it, although we rarely used it. This is true for the terrace as well. You’d think being so high up you’d get hot. But, the breeze is constant and makes the experience nice and cool, naturally. The natural climate in Medellin seems to me like one of the best in the World, never too hot, never too cold.
Every room has a recycling bin and the disposal room is very easy to navigate. Recycling goes in the green (which was on the left-hand side on my floor, but I don’t know if every floor is the same). The chute is for the garbage only, though, so make sure you follow the directions to be green, they take sustainability seriously here!
Soul is a great setting for anyone looking to do some self-improvement or healing. If you’re looking to get some work done there is also high-speed internet throughout the hotel. Including the terrace!
On the terrace, you will find a beautiful sanctuary. There is a gym, sauna, game/billiards room, pool, and study area. Everyone is different, so your personal reasons for coming to Medellin may differ from mine.
Personally, I came here to get away but also refocus on my work. I am always way more focused if I get a workout in. But, the study hall/co-working area was also perfect for getting in the zone with work.
The great thing is, though, you don’t need to have the same vacation goals to heal here. The pool is soothing and open to the air. If you’re looking to get a little tan and just listen to the peaceful breeze, this is the best place for you.
So no matter what your vacation goals are, you can find a place to heal here. Make sure you take full advantage of all of the luxuries provided on the terrace. It’s completely unique and both inspiring and relaxing.
The terrace was so beautiful I wanted to make its own private section. As you can see from the images below, the terrace is open to the sky.
If you go to the very end you will get a perfect view of the city below. I especially loved the brick-colored rooftops contrasting against the green of the trees. If you are near the pool you will be able to see most of the skyline!
The very tall buildings are on this side as well. They really help illuminate the skyline and the shadows cast against the buildings make the whole city seem enchanting.
The gym was by far one of my favorite parts of this hotel. It has two treadmills with three speeds and three levels of incline. They are both facing the large windows overlooking the city, which provides a nice breezy while you’re working out.
This was one of the best parts of this gym. But, for all you bodybuilders out there, you’ll find this gym great. They have a weight bench as well as a lifting rack. I did use the weights for my squats and lifting, but was not able to use the lifting machine (maybe one day!).
They also have a peloton-type bike and two stationary bikes. I really enjoyed using the bikes for a cool-down after the treadmill. But, of course, it is totally up to you for your workout execution. But, rest assured they have the equipment you need.
Just make sure to text the Soul WhatsApp (24 hours) to reserve the gym in order to avoid congestion while we wait for COVID issues to subside! I always did it the day before, and you can reserve it for one hour between 10 am-9 pm. If no one reserved it after you and you feel like staying, no problem!
Also, I heard through the grapevine they are updating the gym soon in a big way! So excited for my next stay and I can check this update out!
The hotel has a Turkish-style steam bath, which I’ve never used before! I remember thinking it was the coolest thing since I’ve never been to someplace that has a sauna.
As you can see from the image above, it is so clean! I always feared using a sauna because I just felt they were so icky. But, when I saw this one I was pleasantly pleased with how cozy and clean it was.
I stayed in my bathing suit the whole time, though. I don’t know the hotel policy on going in with a towel, but I felt more comfortable in my bathing suit.
The pool is a little higher up on the terrace than the rest of the seating area. It’s also nicely concealed behind some shrubs which provides the people using it with comforting privacy.
The height of the pool also provides a breathtaking view of the city. I felt like I was flying while I was swimming. There are also nice lounging chairs all around.
I thought this was excellent for families with kids and we saw quite a few families. The parents can chill out in the lounge chairs and let the sunlight heal them. And the kids can play in the pool in full view of their parents.
I introduced you to the private transportation system already, but here I will give you some more details. The private drivers must be reserved so if you know you have a trip you’d like to take around the city, make sure you reach out to reserve them.
They provide transportation to and from the airport, which we touched on already. But, this makes this service in demand. So, just make sure you reserve them on time.
They provide transportation for tours around the city as well. These trips cost between $30-$40 per hour. We took this service to a cacao tour and coffee tour (which we will discuss soon in an upcoming post!).
Our driver was named Sebastian and he spoke perfect English and navigated difficult terrain with ease. He drove us up mountains and down country paths, which are far more rugged than any country roads American’s from the coastal cities are accustomed to.
I highly recommend using their service over a taxi or driving your personal car. Especially for the coffee tour, much of the paths up the mountains were not paved at all. You can contact Sebastian on WhatsApp at +57 304-206-6675.
In closing, I just want to give a little “shout out” to the Soul staff. Unfortunately, I did not get all of their names. But one of them, Andres, personally introduced himself to me and welcomed me. He offered to help with anything we need or any concerns we have.
Valentina was the one in charge of the front desk most days. She was so courteous and helpful. She was the primary point of contact I had on the Soul WhatsApp channel. When my boyfriend got sick and I mentioned it to her, she asked me the next day how he was feeling and if we needed any help.
I really felt that it was so personal and kind! She spoke excellent English which was very comforting to me when I was traveling here. I am lucky because my boyfriend is a Colombian citizen and knows both Spanish and English.
But, I remembered when I traveled to Peru three years ago by myself, no one spoke English. I thought about how comforting it would be coming from the United States by myself to Medellin for the first time and finding the staff spoke perfect English! It is very comforting.
Last, the hotel’s staff at their cafe “Smash”, are all very kind and helpful. I will do a separate article where we will explore this cafe in detail because it was just that good! But, just briefly, the staff here spoke English so getting your morning coffee is easy. Not to mention the food was so fresh, healthy, and convenient for us in the hotel.
They also bring your food to your room, which I thought was awesome. Overall, the staff is amazing and is truly the part that makes this whole hotel feel like home.
We left Soul Lifestyle on February fourth to head back home to Bogota. Valentina assisted us with the checkout process. She is patient and knowledgeable and makes the whole experience pleasant and simple.
They check the room before you leave to ensure nothing was broken or damaged. I personally cleaned our room in detail because the cleaning staff keeps the whole hotel so lovely I didn’t want to leave a mess. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole stay and I remember feeling I was going to miss this lovely city.
I am sure the next time my boyfriend and I visit we will be visiting Soul as well.
