covid medellin testing

Greetings Casacol guests Medellin travellers!

See below for a guides to the latest rules and COVID testing options for travellers arriving to and departing from Colombia. We will keep this blog page up to date as changes develop and we hope one day to delete this page entirely!

COVID Travel Update

The Colombian Ministry of Health announced on January 6, 2021 that international travellers have the following options when entering into Colombia:

1) Present a negative PCR test (within 4 days of travel) at check-in/arrival, OR
2) Explain your difficulty in obtaining a PCR test prior to boarding, quarantine and obtain a PCR test on arrival

Currently only about 36.5% of travellers are presenting a negative PCR test at check-in. If you are entering into Colombia under option 2 we highly suggest you obtain the test at the arrivals level (right of door #3) at the white tents set up for on-site tests, results delivered by email within 24-36 hours.

Returning to the United States

For our guests returning to the United States, you also have options according to the CDC guidelines released January 26, 2021.

1) Present a negative COVID test (Antigen or PCR) prior to boarding, OR
2) Present a doctors’ recovery letter written within 3 months of a positive infection (see link above for details)

Airport Testing Option

At JMC Airport Medellin arrivals level you can get an antigen test AND RESULT within 20-40 minutes for use prior to boarding for $80,000 COP, just give yourself some extra time. Or you can get tested at your Casacol rental/hotel by nurse house-call any time within 3 days of boarding for $115,000 COP from Laboratorio Abad in Poblado (see below). Casacol staff are ready to assist you if needed, don’t let testing be a deterrent to Medellin travel!

General COVID situation in Medellin

Regardless, COVID cases in Medellin are dropping dramatically to the lowest levels since borders were re-opened. The Pfizer vaccine roll-out started in February 2021, and ICU supply/demand is normalizing rapidly. In February 2021 the Mayor of Medellin announced that restaurants, bars, nightclubs can extend their operating hours until 2am. Mask wearing outside your home in Medellin is a must and police will stop to remind you to put your mask on if you forget. Otherwise life has now normalized as much we could expect at this point.

Flight Connectivity

Post-pandemic international flight connectivity has normalized to the highest levels since 2019. The flight frequency to Medellin to Madrid is still down as Colombians cannot enter the EU without a visa. Otherwise flights to MIA/FLL, Panama, New York have resumed pre-pandemic schedules with American Airlines actually increasing flights MIA to MDE and Viva Air adding new routes to Orlando.

Future of Travel to Medellin

At Casacol we have seen tremendous pent-up demand for Medellin travel since international flights resumed in September and October 2020. The long term travel trend to Colombia and Medellin in particular is firmly in place. However we know that testing requirements can be an inhibitor to travel and we expect that as cases continue to drop, that the PCR requirement to enter Colombia will be dropped as well. Some kind of “vaccine passport” such as the one for Yellow Fever may soon come as an international standard in 2021.
