The Best ATV and Motorcycle Tours in Caldas

TLDR? ATV tours are a great way to explore not only Medellín but the surrounding town of Caldas.

You might have already gone on a bike tour around Medellín. Heck, you might have stepped up your game and taken a motorcycle tour!

But, if you want to really get wild, you can’t say you’ve done it all until you’ve been on an ATV tour.

Even though Medellín is a bustling city, if you head just a little way out of the center, you can find some amazing ATV tours to try. How do I know? Because I went on one myself.

Here’s what to know about taking an ATV tour in Medellín.

Where to Go on an ATV or Motorcycle Tour

There are a couple of places where you can go on tours, but I’d recommend heading out to nearby Caldas.

Caldas is a town near Medellin, and it won’t take you more than 40 minutes to get out there. The area has rough terrain which really adds to the whole ATV or dirt bike experience.

In fact, this is one of the best places for a motorcycle tour around Medellín! Not only will you get to take in great views, but you’ll also get to go off the beaten track and try something a bit different.

How to Get to Caldas for Your Tour

Get to Caldas for Your Tour

Normally the tour company will pick you up in Medellín and take you out to Caldas for the tour. Since Caldas is actually so close to Medellín, this isn’t really a big deal.

The transportation is almost always included in your tour price, too, so you won’t have to pay extra. Most companies pick you up from Parque El Poblado or another meetup point, but you can also request for them to pick you up from your Casacol hotel or vacation rental

But, there are other options too. If you’re not just going to Caldas to take an AVT or motorcycle tour, you can get to Caldas on the bus, metro, taxi, or in a rental car.

Still, I highly recommend going with the tour company. It makes it much easier to get to the area and saves you a lot of time.

What to Know Before You Book Your Tour

What to Know Before You Book Your Tour

Before you race out to book an ATV or motorcycle tour, there are a few things that you need to be prepared for.

For this adrenaline-filled adventure, you should be in good physical condition. People with cardiac issues or who are pregnant are usually advised not to go on the tour.

On top of that, you’ve also got to be prepared for any weather. The weather in Medellín can be a bit unpredictable, so be prepared.

If there are heavy rains, the company may cancel the tour. But, if you’re just dealing with a few light rain showers, you’ll most likely just pack a jacket and get on the road anyway!

In the event that they do cancel the tour, they’ll help you reschedule a date to try again. In Colombia, giving refunds isn’t very common, so it helps to have another free day that you can take the tour in case things go awry.

Another thing to remember is to wear protective clothing. The tour company gives you a helmet and a jacket, and they do so for a reason. The roads get rough in Caldas, so wearing these help protect you if you get thrown from the vehicle.

As someone who got thrown from her vehicle, trust me when I say you want to have these on.

What to Expect on Your ATV or Motorcycle Tour

What to Expect on Your ATV or Motorcycle Tour

Alright, enough about getting to Caldas and prepping for your tour. Let’s talk about what you should actually expect!

First, we’ll take a look at what’s included. Then, I’ll give you a rundown of what it was all like for me.

What’s Included

Most ATV and motorcycle tours include:

  • The ATV or motorcycle
  • A helmet and protective jacket
  • Transportation to and from Medellín
  • Activity insurance
  • A bilingual guide
  • Snacks
  • Photos

The Experience

The Experience

Your trip starts with being picked up from somewhere in Medellín, whether that’s your Airbnb or a chosen meeting point.

The company will take you down to Caldas and to the activity center, where you’ll pick whether you’ll be riding an ATV or a motorcycle.

Both vehicles let you fit 1-2 people, although there may be some height and weight restrictions. You’ll be riding the same roads, but the motorcycle is a bit harder, and you’ll feel the road differently depending on which you pick.

We own a motorcycle and ride it all the time, so for us, the ATV was the obvious choice.

After that, you’re off to explore the backroads and nature trails of Caldas! You’ll go on a number of different trails, and the whole adventure will last about five hours from start to finish.

When you arrive back at the departure point, you’ll have a chance to eat some refreshments before being driven back to Medellín to wind down for the evening.

Book an ATV Tour Today

There’s no debate—ATV tours are a unique way to see a bit more of Medellín than just the city center, and other towns like Caldas that have so much to give you. And they’re a spectacular way to get your adrenaline pumping.

Whether you book the same tour I did, or you go for something completely new, it’s an experience I definitely recommend.
