The 7 Best Garden Shops

The 7 Best Garden Shops

TLDR? La Palma Garden is the best garden shop in Medellin.

Everyone knows that Medellín is known as the city of the Eternal Spring, which means it shouldn’t be any surprise that you’ll find tropical plants on every corner.

That’s also why the best Airbnbs are decorated with tons of ornamental plants to build that natural environment.

Now, while there are plenty of hotels and Airbnbs that come with their own plants, it’s always nice to add a bit of life to your place with some plant babies of your own.

Or, you might just want to see if you can work your magic and get some of them to flower while you’re there. Either way, it pays to know about a few garden shops in the city. Here are my top picks!

1. La Palma Garden

La Palma Garden

As one of the best fertilizer stores in the city, Vivero La Palma offers you pretty much everything you need to start your own garden.

What’s cool about this place is that there are tons of different plants. There’s everything from teeny-tiny succulents to towering palm trees!

According to La Palma, they actually specialize in Bonsai trees. They’ve got some gorgeous ones for sale and are happy to offer gardening advice to help you get started if you’re not used to growing these guys.

They also offer gardening, garden design, and delivery services. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, just hire one of the pros to head to your house and do it for you!

2. Lluvia Verde Garden

Lluvia Verde Garden

If you love minimalist decorations and sweet succulents, this place is for you. Lluvia Verde

You will also find different types of ornamental plants for interior and exterior and other small items such as cacti.

Now, when I say small, I really do mean small. The majority of the plants in this garden are more like desktop plants for your new nomadic office setup in your Casacol rental property

I personally liked this because it meant that I could pick up plants to put on my fish tank or in window boxes without worrying about taking up tons of space.

And of course, the prices here are super cheap. If you’re just wanting to spend a couple of bucks on things to brighten up your home, this is definitely a good place to go.

3. Al Solar Garden

Al Solar Garden

Al Solar Garden is a place where the staff is passionate about everything involved with gardening. They’re experts in things like gardening, reforestation, sowing, vertical garden installation, and garden design.

What’s cool about this place is that they’re super environmentally conscious. They run the occasional workshop to educate the community about how to operate a successful and non-toxic garden.

Apart from that, this is just an all-around good gardening shop. They’ve got a wide variety of plants and tons of non-toxic fertilizers to choose from.

If you’re already living a green lifestyle, this is a shop that can support your beliefs and still hook you up with the gardening supplies you need.

4. Sembramos

Sembramos

This is a place for a true nature lover. Why? Because the staff here cultivates their own earthworms!

These little friends will help you by eating food scraps, which become compost as they pass through the worm’s body. The shop then uses that to fertilize their plants!

You will also find an amazing irrigation system made with clay pots. The staff has these set up all around the shop to make sure each plant maintains the right level of humidity.

If this is sounding a bit complex for you, don’t panic. Sembramos has online gardening courses so you can learn a little more about urban gardening or how to take care of your inside plants.

While there are all the usual suspects (indoor and outdoor plants, pots, and more), the real gem at this place is their grow-your-own salad kit.

The kit comes with standard veggies such as tomatoes and lettuce that you can grow in a sunny window in your Airbnb!

They’ve got some other urban gardening kits that are also great options for exercising your green thumb at home.

5. Tierra Negra Garden

Tierra Negra Garden

Have you ever seen a Bonsai that produces fruit? Well, I certainly hadn’t until I came across Tierra Negra hidden in El Poblado

This garden has mostly stylized plants and pots. They use decorative stones to add cute touches to the plants they sell, which I think is pretty cool.

While I was here I picked up a mini orange tree. It actually had a couple of tiny (edible) oranges that were on it! It hasn’t flowered since, but it’s grown into a beautiful Bonsai that I proudly display in my window.

Apart from the Bonsais and ornamental trees, you’ve got to take a look at the gift baskets here. The shop offers combo deals where you can pick up orchids or other small flowers paired with handmade soaps, essential oils, and other cute little gifts.

If you’re not after gifts and just want gardening supplies, well, there’s plenty of that too. There are fertilizers and pots among other things.

Basically, Tierra Negra is a place where you can get lost. There’s lots to buy and lots to discover during an afternoon at this shop!

6. Placita de Flores

Placita de Flores

La Placita is a set of different stores with cheaper plants than you might find in other parts of Medellin.

The stores included in this place are:

  • Basket shops
  • Plant pot makers
  • Stores selling hand-woven bird cages
  • Indoor plant shops
  • Outdoor plant shops

These small shops basically make handcrafted clay or wicker pots and baskets. They’re designed for you to store your plants in them!

There are all sizes and colors, too, so you’re bound to find something you like. Plus, the wares are super traditional of Colombia.

In terms of the plants, you’ll find mostly ornamental plants rather than veggies. However, those are probably the better pick for a temporary stay in Medellin anyway.

7. Vivero Florecer

Vivero Florecer

Vivero Florecer is a gorgeous flower and plant shop located in the Laureles part of town. I actually think that Laureles has better garden shops than Poblado, so it’s worth checking this one out!

At Vivero Florecer, you’ll find both indoor and outdoor plants as well as pots, fertilizers, and seeds.

They also sell, oddly, clay piggy banks which are pretty cute. I picked one of these guys up because I love to paint, and thought it would make for a cute little art project.

In terms of plants, you’ll find quite a good variety. They’ve got perennials and evergreens, so you can really pick whatever you personally enjoy.

Another thing to note about this place is that they have a great online store! If you have questions or want gardening tips, you can even check out the FAQ section on their site for additional help.
